The community grew through most of the 1950's and 1960's as a cottage community serving the four Qu'Appelle Lakes that occupy the valley surrounding the town. Cottagers from Regina and other southern Saskatchewan communities used Fort Qu'Appelle as a base from which to explore the scenic and historic river valley, purchase hardware and groceries and contract services.

In 1987 a group of entrepreneurs proposed a $12 million (1987 dollars) desination resort at Fort Qu'Appelle along the western shoreline of Mission Lake which forms the eastern border of the community. Extensive plans for a marina, hotel and residential subdivision were developed around a championship 18 hole golf course resort. A private investment offering was approved for the development only to be quashed by a land claim by the aboriginal groups in the area. By the time the land claim was removed a decade later, interest in the development had wained, investors had left and the developers had moved to Alberta where they completed three successful developments. The aboriginal groups never purchased the resort lands with the money they received for their land claim, opting to purchase farm land and properties in Regina and Saskatoon. Fort Qu'Appelle has deteriorated significantly since then with many businesses and individuals moving to larger communities.
