Ford City, Pennsylvania


 

Ford City is a borough located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Pittsburgh. Ford city is in an agricultural and coal-mining region, however, coal-mining is seldom seen thereabouts any longer. The place lies within the well-known Rust Belt. In 1900, 2,870 people resided in Ford City; in 1910, 4,850 people lived there; and in 1940, 5,795 of them lived there. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 3,451. It was founded as a company town in 1887 by John Baptist Ford (1811-1903) to house Works No. 3 of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, now known as PPG Industries.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.13% water.
