Ford City, Pennsylvania

Ford City is a borough located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Pittsburgh. Ford city is in an agricultural and coal-mining region, however, coal-mining is seldom seen thereabouts any longer. The place lies within the well-known Rust Belt. In 1900, 2,870 people resided in Ford City; in 1910, 4,850 people lived there; and in 1940, 5,795 of them lived there. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 3,451. It was founded as a company town in 1887 by John Baptist Ford (1811-1903) to house Works No. 3 of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, now known as PPG Industries.

As of the census{{GR|2}} of 2000, there are 3,451 people, 1,580 households, and 935 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,876.7/km² (4,864.8/mi²). There are 1,713 housing units at an average density of 931.5/km² (2,414.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 94.38% White, 3.88% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,580 households out of which 25.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% are non-families. 37.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.84.

The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 84.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.3 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $24,457, and the median income for a family is $30,843. Males have a median income of $28,438 versus $21,919 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $14,318. 13.4% of the population and 13.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
