The 2002 World Cup offered many surprises and premieres. High favourites like France, Portugal, and Argentina already stranded in the group stages, whereas small soccer nations like Turkey, South Korea, and Senegal excelled. Turkey (who does represent UEFA, as opposed to AFC) and South Korea were the first Asian nations to play in a World Cup semifinal.
