Football World Cup 1998 (qualification)


 

170 teams took part in the {{Wc|1998}} qualification rounds, divided in 6 Continental Zones. For the first time, 32 spots would be available in the World Cup. Those 32 spots would be distributed as follows:

  • Europe (UEFA): 49 teams competing for 14 places. France, the hosts, were already qualified, for a total of 15 places.
  • South America (CONMEBOL): 9 teams competing for 4 places. Brazil, the defending champions, were already qualified, for a total of 5 places.
  • North, Central America and Caribbean (CONCACAF): 30 teams competing for 3 places.
  • Asia (AFC): 36 teams competing for 3 places. Also, one of these teams would take part in an Intercontinental Play-off that could result in one more place for Asia, for a total of 4.
  • Africa (CAF): 36 teams competing for 5 places.
  • Oceania (OFC): 10 teams. The best of them would take part in an Intercontinental Play-off that could result in the only place for Oceania - or not.
