Flint, Michigan
Flint, Michigan is a city in Genesee County along the Flint River about 60 miles northwest of Detroit. Its population in 1998 was 131,000 people, and it is the fourth largest city in Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of 124,943. It is the county seat of Genesee County6. Flint Charter Township is adjacent to the city on the west, but is politically independent.
Education
The University of Michigan-Flint is a satellite campus of the University of Michigan's main campus in Ann Arbor. Kettering University, formerly known as GMI, is a highly-rated engineering university. Mott Community Collegehttp://www.mcc.edu is the main community college in Flint, and vocational training, as well as several advanced degrees are offered from Baker College.

Public education K-12 is provided under the umbrella of the Flint School District. Students attend 26 elementary schools, 4 middle schools (each named after a well-known American poet: Holmes, Longfellow, Whittier, and McKinley, and eight high schools. The city's two oldest schools, Flint Central (formerly Flint City High School) and Flint Northern have relocated from their original locations, but have remained local institutions since 1875 and 1929, respectively. The current building for located Flint Central, in East Village near Mott Community College and the Cultural Center, was finished in 1923. It was designed by Malcolmson, Higginbotham, and Palmer, and is one of the city's architectural treasures. Declining enrollment and costly maintenance, however, have threatened the future of many of Flint's schools. While the district has come under fire for high truancy and dropout rate and low test scores, it has also been lauded for its ground-breaking magnet program, particuarly programs in math and science and fine arts. Moreover, the district was the testring ground for 's ideas, and a local elementary school has been named in his honor.

Flint also hosts private schools Luke M. Powers Catholic High School, the Michigan School for the Blind and Deaf and the The Valley School, which occupies the former home of the Michigan School for the Deaf.
