It is locally known to be a poorer town in the Hastings Metropolitan Area and is subject to much crime, yet, while land and house prices in Metro Hastings skyrocket, many wealthier people are looking to move to Flaxmere as it is cheaper than Havelock North and Downtown Hastings and is under massive re-generation to make it a more pleasant and safer place to live. Modern subdivisions and new homes are being built around Flaxmere for more affluent people as part of the re-generation.
