Live performance
Fitzroy is a hub for live music in Melbourne, and plays host to several prominent venues: the Rob Roy Hotel, Bar Open, the Evelyn Hotel, and the Empress Hotel (in Fitzroy North). The well-known Punters Club was also located in the area; however, it was forced to close in 2002 due to rising rents.

Sport
The Fitzroy Football Club (the Fitzroy Lions) was formed in 1883 as part of the Victorian Football League. The club ran into financial difficulties in the 1980s, and was forced to merge with the Brisbane Bears to form the Brisbane Lions.
