A First Lady is the female spouse of an elected male head of state or head of government, such as a President, Prime Minister, Premier or Governor (a First Gentleman being the male spouse of an elected female head of state or government; however some men in this position choose not to use this term). As throughout history the vast majority of elected leaders have been male, this article will use First Lady for simplicity.

In many countries (such as the United Kingdom), the Prime Minister's spouse has no recognised function, duties or title, and the term is not used.
