- The initials 'HCE' are used for the many aliases of the criminal protagonist in "Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones", a Hugo-winning story by Samuel R. Delany. For example "Henrietta, Countess of Effingham" and then her son, the "Honorable Clement Effingham". The protagonist was originally named "Harold Clancy Everett", a name he despises.
- Another Hugo winner "Riders of the Purple Wage", by Philip Jose Farmer, is also based on wordplay, makes references to "Finnegans Wake", and includes the pun "Winnegan's Fake!".
