Figs (Ficus) are a genus of about 800 species of woody trees, shrubs and vines in the family Moraceae, native throughout the tropics with a few species extending into the warm temperate zone.

The genus includes one species, the Common Fig F. carica, that produces a commercial fruit called a fig; the fruit of many other species are edible though not widely consumed. Other examples of figs include the banyans and the Sacred Fig (Peepul or Bo) tree. Most species are evergreen, while those from temperate areas, and areas with a long dry season, are deciduous.

A fig fruit is derived from a specially adapted flower. The fruit (an accessory fruit called a syconium) has a bulbous shape with a small opening (the ostiole) in the end and a hollow area inside lined with small red edible seeds. The fruit/flower is pollinated by small wasps that crawl through the opening to fertilise the fruit.

Figs come in two sexes: hermaphrodite (called caprifigs because only goats eat them) and female. Fig wasps grow in caprifigs; when they mature, they mate, and the females leave in search of immature figs to lay their eggs in. When the wasp finds one, she pollinates the female flowers but will not lay eggs in the edible fig, only in the caprifig. Thus the edible fig ripens without any wasp frass in it.

When a caprifig ripens, another caprifig must be ready to be pollinated. Tropical figs bear continuously, enabling fruit-eating animals to survive the time between masts. In temperate climes, wasps hibernate in figs, and there are distinct crops. Caprifigs have three crops per year; edible figs have two. The first of the two is small and is called breba; the breba figs are olynths.

There is typically only one species of wasp capable of fertilizing the flowers of each species of fig, and therefore plantings of fig species outside of their native range results in effectively sterile individuals. For example, in Hawaii, some 60 species of figs have been introduced, but only four of the wasps that fertilize them have been introduced, so only four species of figs produce viable seeds there.

Figs are also easily propagated from cuttings.

Room with separate entrance in spacious and friendly N. Berkeley house (berkeley north / hills) $753

We have available a mid/large-size bedroom on the lower floor of spacious house in the North Berkeley Hills in a quiet and safe residential area. We are on the 65 and 67 bus lines, a 10-min walk to the Berkeley Rose Garden and Solano Ave., and a 30 min. walk to the UC Berkeley campus. Move-in date is Jan. 15, pro-rated for that month. Rent is 753.60 per month (to increase by 3% in Aug 2009), not including utilities (on average $40-50/mo including wireless internet). The current residents are five UCB Biophysics graduate students. One is moving out because he is getting married. We like to keep the house clean, and have a very good relationship with our landlords. Most Sunday mornings, we have a leisurely brunch together and a few times a year, we host cocktail and/or dinner parties. In general, we enjoy making or listening to music, cooking, keeping up with the news, going for hikes or camping trips, and watching movies together when we have time. The available bedroom is on the lower level of the house. It shares a bathroom with one other bedroom, but can be accessed directly from the outside of the house via a sliding glass door. There are two living rooms and two kitchens (upstairs and downstairs), ample yard space, a gas grill, our own washer/dryer, and a dishwasher. We also have lots of fruit trees, including a lemon tree that produces year-round and a fig tree that makes fruit twice a year. The other three bedrooms upstairs share two bathrooms. The upper living/dining area is mostly used for entertaining and homework, while the downstairs area is centered around the TV. For pictures, please see: http://1044keithave.shutterfly.com/ Currently we have one cat (Axel) living in the house. In early January, he may go live with his actual owner who moved to San Francisco, but this has not been settled yet. He is well behaved and can be easily kept out of one's bedroom if you do not want him there. Our landlords only allow one cat in the house at a time.

open room in cooperative house Fort Awesome (berkeley) $627

This is an attempt at a new kind of craigslist posting – one where the poster is entirely honest about both the upsides and downsides of the housing available. Most listings accentuate the good and hide the bad – you don’t discover the downsides till you waste your time visiting or, worse, till you live there for a while. 3 Sections: THE FACTS, WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT THIS PLACE and WHAT’S NOT SO GREAT ABOUT THIS PLACE. The Facts: The 14-bedroom house is near Ashby BART in Berkeley – on a huge 9800 sq ft property. We are a 16-person co-op – the first actualization of our nonprofit’s mission to build affordable, sustainable and enjoyable group/cooperative housing that does good for its community and fosters creativity. WE OWN IT AND WE RUN IT. Literally. We are ages 22-40. A few more men than women, but close to an even split, which is an ideal. We share chores, we cook and eat together, and we have weekly meetings. We have a vegetarian kitchen. We grow food in our abundant gardens, and we buy it in bulk and at the farmer’s market. We each pay $150/month for food and utilities. We eat the eggs from our lovely, if aging, chickens. Recently we've discussed getting new chicks! We compost and are completely energy self-sufficient via solar arrays. WE SOUND LIKE HIPPIES, DON’T WE? WE’RE NOT – READ ON! We are across the street from an elementary school and our next-door neighbor is a gospel-music community church. We love bikes and have lots of them. We throw elaborate parties. What’s Great About This Place: The PEOPLE: We’re bright – this sounds arrogant but it’s true and important. We’re creative – In addition to all of our art projects, the entire house is a creation of our collective vision – everything is a palate, everything can be made more beautiful or interesting. We’re ambitious – we think this house will be a model for how regular people can stop renting and instead live in sustainable, richly satisfying communities that they own. We’re self-reflective and sensitive – we actually listen to each other and value each voice (or at least we try to). We’re fun – we like to do yoga on the roof, fix up our bikes together, run around in the park, have spontaneous dance parties. We’re friendly – we support each other, we listen to each other’s joys and problems. We try to foster a sense of family and a sense of home. The PROPERTY: We have plum trees, apple trees, pear trees, cherry trees, fig trees, asian pear trees, and pomegranate trees. We have a big garden which we use to grow food and spices. It also houses our chickens. We have a sunny roof-deck. Our shared kitchen is in a separate building, where we spend lots of time cooking, hanging out, and drinking tea together. We have lots of communal space for people to stretch out and do their own thing. The PURPOSE: We believe that the ways people have to work so hard to pay to rent housing are unfortunate and unnecessary. When you rent from a landlord, you are paying extra for a landlord’s profit and do not have free reign to make the property whatever you want it to be. Your roots don’t go down deep because it’s temporary. People should own their homes and should make them extraordinary. We believe that the ways people live in insulated, fenced-off homes and apartments, without knowing even their immediate neighbors is unfortunate and unnecessary. It breeds loneliness, television-watching and waste. Suburbs rely on cheap oil (they are far from city centers and food sources) and are soul-less (tract homes, big box retail.) Housing should be sustainable, as resource self-sufficient as possible, and should put people together with other people to discuss things, share ideas, create and enjoy things together, not just watch TV or surf the internet alone in separate units. What we’re doing is making a new model from scratch and that feels hugely rewarding – to not just have the idea, but to see it through and make it real. The house and the property is a palpable, tangible expression of our vision. The momentum is exciting – our nonprofit recently bought the house next door as well and we found a separate group of friends that is now autonomously remodeling their new home. Our non-profit’s mission statement: Cooperative Roots builds sustainable, affordable housing, empowers people to create democratic cooperatives, and strengthens local communities through shared resources and education. What’s Not so Great About This Place: It gets dirty sometimes – the common areas get filled with clutter, the bathrooms can get pretty darn messy. For meticulously clean people, moving to this house is like moving to a foreign country and a foreign culture in terms of cleanliness. We do clean – but things get dirty quickly with so many people. Some people are squeamish and can’t handle it – and there are others still fighting the good fight to clean it up. Meetings can be frustrating – our meetings are run by consensus, which means we don’t pass a motion unless everyone agrees to it – this is a way to be sure to take every voice into account and to seek a compromise that everyone is happy about. But the net effect can often be long council meetings and long discussions. People can have conflicting visions – some people want the place to have more people, some fewer. Some want soy milk instead of cow milk, some the other way around. FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO ARRANGE A VISIT, email us some info about yourself: 1. Name, What you do these days 2. Unfurnished house available for temporary rental for 0-3 months (berkeley north / hills) $2000 6bd

We just bought a 6 BR/3 BA house in Albany/North Berkeley -- but we are not moving into it for another few months because we'd like to do some construction first. It will take us about 3 months to get the permits and the materials in, so we will not be able to begin construction until then. The house would therefore be standing idle, and we'd rather have someone living in it so we thought we would post it for temporary rental thru construction start. The house is definitely liveable immediately, but (full disclosure) it is a little run-down in its current state (hence our upcoming renovations). In its current state, it has a nice great room with a functional fireplace, a kitchen, sunken dining room, sizeable pantry, 6 BR/3 BA (inc. one with a tub and two with showers), lots of light, and many fruit trees (including a lemon tree, plum tree, two apple trees, kiwi plants, and a beautiful large fig tree). Please see photos below. We are flexible on start/end dates, and would need to rent to people who would be flexible as well (e.g., we may need a contractor to come visit at some point during your stay). The house is available for immediate rental so please contact us if you are interested.
