Fifth Gear is similar to the popular BBC show Top Gear, which began in 1977. When Top Gear (in its original format) was axed from the BBC schedule in 2001 many of its regular presenters defected to make Fifth Gear. Channel 5 wanted to buy the Top Gear name from the BBC, but the latter refused. The show first aired in 2002.

When the series returns in the autumn it will be longer at around 45 minutes without the adverts, most probably in order to compete more effectively with the BBC's more popular Top Gear.
