FIDE World Chess Championship 2005
The FIDE World Chess Championship 2005 is taking place in San Luis Province in Argentina.

It is a chess tournament between eight players. The standings after nine rounds are:

- Peter Svidler 5.5
- Viswanathan Anand 5.0
- Alexander Morozevich 5.0
- Péter Lékó 4.0
- Rustam Kasimdzhanov 3.5
- Michael Adams 3.0
- Judit Polgár 2.5
Kasimdzhanov is the defending FIDE champion, and Polgár is the first woman to compete for the world chess championship.

It is a double round robin event, where every player plays every other player twice, once with each colour. It uses normal (slow) time controls, unlike the Knock-Out FIDE World Chess Championship tournaments held since 1998 which were criticised for using fast time controls.

The opening ceremony took place on September 27, and the matches started on September 28. All matches begin at 18:00 Universal Time (15:00 local time). There will be rest days on October 2, 7, and 12. The last normal matches will start on October 14, any tie-breaks will take place on October 15, and the closing ceremony will take place on October 16.

FIDE (the International Chess Federation) has declared that they will regard whoever wins the tournament as World Chess Champion. However, she or he will not be the undisputed champion, as there are some who consider Vladimir Kramnik to be the World Chess Champion. He was invited to take part in this tournament, but declined.
