United States
California and Hawaii have laws that restrict the ownership of ferrets. California residents have submitted a bill, AB647, to make ferrets legal in California http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=ab_647&sess=CUR&house=B&author=koretz. Ferrets are also restricted by individual cities, such as New York City. Opponents of anti-ferret laws claim that these laws stem from ignorance and the mistaken idea that ferrets are wild animals. They argue that the bans make about as much sense as banning poodles because wolves are wild animals. Ferrets are not legal in Washington, DC (but are legal in its suburbs); They are now legal in Dallas, Fort Worth, not legal in Beaumont, Texas, Bloomington, Minnesota and Burnsville, Minnesota. A permit to own a ferret is needed in New Jersey and Rhode Island
