A single geographical and political unit for most of its history, it was only in the 1920s and 30s that the Ferghana valley was divided between three different countries (The Uzbek SSR, Kirghiz SSR and Tajik SSR). Under the Khans of Kokand in the 18th century the valley formed the nucleus of an independent khanate, whilst later under Russian rule in the 19th century Ferghana was a province to itself, with large areas of the Pamirs included. It is the most fertile and most densely-populated region in the whole of Central Asia.
