Coly played in all of Senegal's matches in the {{Wc|2002}}. After impressing at the tournament, he moved from Lens to Birmingham City on loan. But this proved to be a poor career move as his sole appearance came against Manchester United. Coly then moved on to Perugia. In his first season, 2003/04, with the Italian club he made 11 appearances but never really impressed. In the 2004/05 season he spent the season in the Perugia B team, making 22 appearances and scoring a goal. In the summer of 2005 he finally made the move to Serie A side Parma.
