When Felixstowe was a serious destination for day trippers, this was a serious railway station. On a bank holiday monday in the 1940s you might get 25,000 people through the station and trains ran straight through from Liverpool Street. But day tripping declined and the motor car took over, and as Felixstowe Docks expanded the passenger trains competed for use of the lines with freightliners, and what was once a rather splendid station is now mostly a car park.

The current station is the other side of the carpack of the original station, which is now Great Eastern Square, a shopping center. This had multiple platforms, where passangers from Ipswich could change for a train to Felixstowe Beach Station and Felixstowe Pier.
