Faust, Part 1
Faust Part 1 (original title: Faust - der Tragödie erster Teil) is a tragic play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, perhaps the best known version of the Faust story. The play is a closet drama, meaning that it is meant to be read rather than performed. It is Goethe's most famous work and considered by many as the greatest German work of literature of all time.
Dungeon (4405-4615) Gretchen's release
Faust penetrates Mephisto into the dungeon, for him the key provided and the guard to sleep put. Gretchen purged to the illusion and recognizes at the beginning of Faust no more. This wants to persuade him to the escape, but she refuses, because she recognizes that Faust does not love her any longer, her only more pitied. Gretchen retains in such a way for itself the pure love. When she sees Mephisto, she frightens and is recommended to God: "court of God! To you I handed yourself over!". Mephisto pushes Faust from the prison with the words: ?Sie ist gerichtet?. The release Gretchens proves however in the last words of the piece: ?Sie ist gerettet?.

In the entire book, Faust stays restless, so you will have to read the second part in order to find out whether Mephisto succeeds or not. While the first part represents the "small world" and takes place in the commoners' milieu, Faust Part 2 takes place in the "wide world" of politics and industrialism. Also, the first part criticizes society, while the second part criticizes politics and the greed of the early industrialists. This play is composed of fragments, written by Goethe over a long period of time. It remains, with the second part, one of the most important works of German literature.
