Farsø

Fars? is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in North Jutland County on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 201 km?, and has a total population of 7,991 (2005). Its mayor is H. O. A. Kjeldsen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Fars?.

Neighboring municipalities are Aalestrup to the southeast, Aars to the east, and L?gst?r to the north. The municipality lies on the eastern shores of the region known as Himmerland, a part of the Jutland peninsula; the southern part of the municipality is a spit sticking out into the waters flowing from the Limfjorden, the strait that separates the main body of the Jutland peninsula from the island of Vendsyssel-Thy.

To the west of the municipality are the waters of Risg?rde Broadening (Risg?rde Bredning), the wide strait separating Fars? municipality from its western municipal neighbor, Sunds?re. As the waters narrow southward at the spit of land they become Hvalp Strait (Hvalpsund). Further south beyond the spit the waters become Lovn's Broadening (Lovns Bredning), which lie off the southern shores of the municipality, and help define most of its southern border.

By January 1, 2007 Fars? municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing L?gst?r, Aalestrup, and Aars municipalities to form the new Vesthimmerland municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 815 km? and a total population of 39,176 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").
