When the galaxy's most skilled hunter is asked to use his skill to protect an important political mission, he finds that he must team up with the telepathic creature "cat", that he had caught and trapped for a museum. "Cat" agrees to help on the condition that, once the mission is over, he be given the chance to turn the tables and become the hunter. John accepts and together they complete their task and destroy the assasins. Billy Singer must then use all his skill to evade the "cat". He turns increasingly primitive, away from the technology of the day and returns to his Navajo roots.
