Eydie Gorm?, whose real name is Edith Gormezano, was born on August 16, circa 1931, (although she may be older) in The Bronx, New York City to Sephardic Jewish immigrant parents. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ She graduated high school in 1946 (the late Stanley Kubrick attended the school at the same time) and worked for the United Nations as a translater given her fluency in the Spanish language. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ She became a singer/chanteuse, and the wife of actor Steve Lawrence on December 29, 1957, by whom she had 2 sons, the younger of whom, Michael, died in 1986 at the age of 23. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ She started her career in Ken Greengrass' band, and after successful performances with Tommy Tucker and Tex Beneke, she became a solo artist in 1952. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ She has regularly appeared on U.S variety shows including The Tonight Show and The Carol Burnett Show, and also performs regularly in Las Vegas in a duo with her husband. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ In 1967, Gorm? won the Grammy Award for her recording of the Jerry Herman ballad "If He Walked Into My Life" from the Broadway musical Mame.
