Explorers (movie)

Explorers (1985) was the first feature film for both River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke. The third young actor in it was Jason Presson. River plays Wolfgang, a sientifically-inclined boy. Ethan plays Benjamin, a psychic and intuitive kid. Jason plays Derek, a street-wise kid. The three of them begin receiving messages of an apparently extraterrestrial origin. These messages enable them to construct their own spaceship, complete with anti-gravity and force-field. The plot thus seems to anticipate Sagan's Contact. The three lads, although from very different backgrounds and having different personalities, develop a strong bond of friendship and boldly go where no human has gone before - but find they have been preceded by Earth's TV transmissions.
