~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ In surviving accounts of Arthur, two originally separate legends of his sword's origin have been retained. The first is the "Sword in the Stone" legend, first reported in Robert de Boron's Merlin, in which Excalibur can only by drawn from the stone by Arthur, the rightful king. The second version is found in the Post-Vulgate Suite du Merlin and was taken up by Sir Thomas Malory. Here, Arthur receives the sword from the Lady of the Lake after breaking his first sword. At his death, he tells a reluctant Sir Bedivere (Sir Griflet in the Post-Vulgate) to return Excalibur to the Lake.
