Evgeny Mravinsky


 

Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Mravinsky ({{lang-ru|??????? ????????????? ??????????}}; {{OldStyleDate|4 June|1903|22 May}}–January 19 1988) was a Russian conductor.

He was born in Saint Petersburg, and first studied biology there before going to the Leningrad Conservatoire to study music. Through the 1930s he conducted at the Kirov Ballet and Bolshoi Opera.

In 1938 he took up the post that he would hold until 1982: chief conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. He raised their reputation to one of the world's leading ensembles.

He gave world premieres of six Dmitri Shostakovich symphonies: numbers 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 12. He premiered Sergei Prokofiev's sixth symphony in Leningrad the year of its composition (1947, http://www.prokofiev.org/catalog/work.cfm?WorkID=144).
