Evanston has a City Manager system of government and is divided into nine wards, each of which is represented by an Alderman, or member of the Evanston City Council. Its current mayor is Lorraine H. Morton. The city government has often had a shaky relationship with Northwestern University, which does not pay property taxes to the city. This is due to the founding charter of Northwestern University, signed in 1851, which granted the school a permanent exemption from paying property taxes. This shaky relationship has led to tension over building codes, law enforcement, and politics. Recently, factions of the city government have made efforts to divide Northwestern's campus into several different wards, possibly to dilute its students' voting potency.

2 week to 1 month sublet in co-op house (Sept 1 - Sept15/30) (palo alto) $255 1bd
Hey, I'm (Joe) moving into an upstairs apartment in my house and am looking for a nice, friendly subletter for the time period Sept 1-Sep15 (if you prefer, Sept 15-30 could also be added as well as Aug 27-31; the rent is ~$17/day). If you're interested, please email me with some info about yourself. We will be having an open house of sorts on Thursday night around 8:15-10:30. Here is some info about the house: We are two guys and two gals looking for a fifth roommate to hang out with us in our friendly eco-aware semi-hippie co-op. Our beautiful house, which we rent, has been a co-op staple in Palo Alto for several decades. Here are some bullets: -close to downtown Palo Alto, Stanford Campus -shared vegetarian meals 1-3 times per week -occasional potluck or other gathering/party -garden in front of house: veggies, herbs, berries, native plants, composting -chronic tea drinking/discussions about random topics -shared staple foods, chores, utilities -non-smoking -mellow, friendly housemates, 21-37 yrs old, 3 grad students, one grad student/teacher, one permaculture designer -large, shared courtyard -bike shelter The room: -available Sept 1 (but a later/earlier move in is totally possible) -weird size (23+feet by 6.5 feet) -LOTS of light (windows on every wall) -DSL access (shared bill) -good-sized closet -shared bathroom -hardwood floor We are looking for: -easy-going folks -willingness/eagerness to be part of our community, sharing in cooking, as well as cleaning rotation -clean, but not obsessively so And now for the juiciest part ... the BIOS!!!: Melanie grew up tap dancing in LA. She's been vegetarian since she was 3, before she knew there was a word for ' veg-e-ta-rian .' She came to Stanford, studied History, then picked up a few grants to run away to Europe for most of 2007. She is currently very happy to be back running around campus, getting her MA in Interdisciplinary Humanities. She concocts by impulse with organic ingredients when it comes to both food and writing. She listens to NPR and likes making film/photo. She is living in SF until ~Sept 21. Then there is William. William designs organic gardens for a living and has numerous interests outside of that. You are sure to have great conversations with him, whether you are interested in the environment and sustainability, psychology, archeology, or alternative medicine. He takes care of the house's garden as well. If you are good to him, he might even let you try some of the ginger beer he's brewed. Patrick is a tall boy who rides a nice blue bike around town. You might have seen him riding this bike to the Nuthouse (typically followed by a more wobbly ride home), to a place with two trees (so he could tie up and walk on his slack rope), or you may even have seen him riding to stanford campus, where he studies a parasite in rats brains which changes their behavior (some sort of neuroscience). Oh yeah, he was also recently on abc news: http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=5350835. Emily hails from none other than Evanston, Illinois. After college and a couple of years living in Mexico/Honduras, she decided to chill out in the bay area for some time. Besides teaching high school and saying 'Whoa, dude' at quasi random moments, she is a full time MA student in Comparative Literature at San Francisco State. Oh, and she's a word sleuth as well. Joe and Rachel live upstairs but will still be hanging out: Joe left behind his meat-and-potatoes Indiana childhood when he moved to the bay area eight years ago. After living in the east bay and San Francisco, and then a brief journey with the Cyclown Circus across Europe, he's now in Palo Alto doing graduate work in physics. When not shooting lasers at atoms, he can be found unicycling in the alley, drawing curious creatures on his chalkboard, and livening up the neighborhood with the sounds of his bike radio as he rolls by.
