Mecham first gained attention outside of Arizona when he canceled the state's Martin Luther King Day holiday. A number of publicized events, including defense of the work ?pickaninny?, and a series of questionable political appointments lead to accusations of racism and cronyism against the governor. As a result of these events even fellow Republicans were calling for the governors resignation.
