Eugen Drewermann

Eugen Drewermann (born June 20 1940 in Bergkamen near Dortmund) is a German Catholic theologian, psychotherapist and writer.

Son of a Lutheran father and a Catholic mother, after his Abitur exam Drewermann studied philosophy in M?nster, theology in Paderborn and psychoanalysis in G?ttingen. In 1972 he became priest in Paderborn. At the same time he worked as psychotherapist, and from 1979 also held lectures in religious history and dogmatics at the Catholic Theological Faculty in Paderborn.

Influenced by Carl Jung, Drewermann interprets biblical texts according to psychoanalytic criteria, as can be seen in his 1988 released book Tiefenpsychologie und Exegese. His interpretations caused unrest among Catholic authorities. As a consequence, on October 8 1991 the Archbishop of Paderborn, Johannes Joachim Degenhardt, disallowed him to teach, shortly later disallowed him to preach and started legal proceedings against him within ecclesiastical jurisdiction. Since then, Drewermann has been working as freelancing writer, has frequent appearances in German TV talk shows and gets invited to lectures all over Germany.

Drewermann also has been analyzing fairy tales for several years, especially those of the Brothers Grimm, interpreting them in psychoanalytic and theological context as well.
