Eudora (email client)

Eudora is a widely used email client for the Microsoft Windows and Macintosh operating systems. It also supports several palmtop computing platforms, including Newton and the Palm OS. It was named after Eudora Welty after her short story "Why I Live at the P.O.". She was flattered by the reference. Eudora was developed by Steve Dorner in 1988 as a part of his studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Eudora was then acquired by Qualcomm in 1991.

Eudora has many excellent features. It has support for 'Stationery', that is a standard reply that is prepared ahead of time to a common question. It also has very nice filters, although it requires a programming mind to do some of the more advanced things possible with them. The fact that Eudora stores emails in text files, rather than in a database like Microsoft Outlook makes it easier to back up portions of your email without backing up the entire database.
