Escape from L.A.

Escape from L.A. is a 1996 film directed by John Carpenter. It is the sequel to the action film Escape from New York. The film's plot concerns ex-war hero Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell. It co-stars Steve Buscemi (Reservoir Dogs) and Pam Grier (Jackie Brown). Although it is touted as a sequel, plot point by plot point, it is virtually identical to it's predecessor (with the obvious exception of location), and some people prefer to see it as a big budget remake, rather than a true sequel.
