Errol Barrow


 

Errol Walton Barrow (January 21 1920 June 1 1987) was a Barbados politician. Born into a family of political and civic activists in the parish of Saint Lucy, his sister Nita Barrow also became a political activist.

Errol Barrow served in the Royal Air Force during World War II flying dozens of missions over Europe. He was in the air force from 1940 until 1947. He was elected to the Barbados parliament in 1951. In 1955 he founded the Democratic Labour Party as a liberal alternative to the Barbados Laboour Party. He became its leader in 1958 and the party won parliamentary elections in 1961. Barrow served as prime minister of Barbados from 1961 until 1976, leading the country to independence in 1966. He implemented agricultural diversification and more support for tourism, and advocated good interracial relations. The Democraitc Labour Party lost elections in 1976 due to bad economic times and the government's interference in the courts which was unpopular. The party came back to power in 1986 and Barrow then served as prime minister until his death, which occurred in Barbados's capital, Bridgetown.

Barrow was a supporter of regional integration. He opposed American interference in Caribbean affairs. He was foreign minister of Barbados from 1966 to 1971.
