Educated and trained as an actor in Canada at Ryerson University, McCormack has been appearing in television productions since his debut in 1986.

His role as the gay lawyer in the NBC comedy series Will & Grace has brought him his most widespread success to date. Nominated for Emmy Awards on three occasions for this role, he won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy in 2001.

Although he plays a gay man in Will and Grace, McCormack is actually heterosexual. He has been married to Janet Holden-McCormack since 1997, and they have a son, Finnigan Holden McCormack.
