Equitation
Equitation classes are classes at horse shows that judge the rider's performance, as opposed to the performance of the horse. Equitation classes occur in the Hunt seat, Saddleseat, Dressage, and Western disciplines. A good equitation rider is always in good balance with the horse, maintains a correct position in every gait, movement, or over a fence, and possess a commanding, but relaxed, presence. They are effective riders, able to direct the horse with nearly invisable aids.
Hunt Seat Equitation
Hunt seat equitation is a branch off the more popular hunter under-saddle and over-fences classes, which simply judge the horse's performance. Equitation classes may also be run "on the flat" or "over fences".

Equtation classes on the flat require the rider to walk, trot, and canter in both directions, judging the rider's position at all three gaits, as well as her effectiveness in controlling the horse. The rider may also be asked to hand-gallop or perform a rein-back, and perform at both the sitting and posting trot, as well as in half-seat. There are usually several riders in the ring at one time.

Equitation classes held over fences ask the rider to jump a small course, judging the rider on their position both on the flat and over the obstacles. Fence heights are generally not as high as those seen in regular hunter classes. The course is often more difficult than a hunter over fences class, as it includes combinations, bending lines, odd distances, narrow fences, and several changes of leads. The rider may be asked to trot a fence, or approach an obstacle at a strong gallop. The rider's signals to the horse should still remain imperceptable, and the horse should go around the course quietly, with imperceptable changes in stride length and clean, correct lead changes. To the spectator, the course should look easy. Over fences equitation classes are performed individually.
