The most significant difference between Engineering and Engineering Technology programs involves the use of calculus level mathematics to solve problems. While it is typical in most Engineering programs for students to take up to three courses in calculus and one in ordinary differential equations, most Engineering Technology students take one calculus course, just enough to cover both differential and integral single variable calculus. This trend is followed throughout each cirriculum as engineering and engineering technology students will sometimes use different means and methods to solve identical problems.

Most U.S. states allow ET students and graduates to sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE Exam) to become an Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) which qualifies individuals to sit for the Principles and Practices of Engineering (PE Exam) to become a Professional Engineer (P.E.). However, ET grads are sought after by many high-tech businesses, because of the combination of solid engineering background and hands-on experience that ET degree programs are designed to provide.
