Energy vampire

In mythology an energy vampire or psychic vampire is a being said to have the ability (and usually the necessity) to feed off the "life force" (aka chi, prana, vitality) of other living creatures. This concept appears in the mythologies of many cultures, just as do blood-drinking vampires. Regions where belief in psychic vampires is common include Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and rural South America. Across Western Europe, there seems to be some connection between energy vampires and demons such as the incubi and succubi, who are said to feed off their partner's sexual energy. Some North American Indian cultures, such as the Hopi, also share this belief.

The mythology of most cultures describe energy vampires as parasites who drain the energy or (life force/prana) from their victims. Other cultures describe a more symbiotic relationship where the vampire would drain energies created by sickness or curse causing a healing effect in their partners.

The concept of both 'vampire' and 'psychic vampire' could be interpreted to represent the issue of social parasitism applied to spiritually or emotionally weak persons; those who appear to "drain" strength from others. Conversely, the romanticized Hollywood view of the vampire (psychic or otherwise) would seem to indicate that the vampire may actually be the charismatic leader who attracts weaker people to him (or her). This concept of a dominant, powerful, and spiritually mysterious vampire was popularized by Anton LaVey and his Church of Satan, but not invented by them. They claimed to have introduced the concept of the 'psychic vampire' into the English language, but this claim is, at least in part, spurious.
