Emporia, Kansas
Emporia is a city located in Lyon County, Kansas, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 26,760. In addition to the Emporia State University, Emporia has two major employers: Dolly Madison Baking and IBP (owned by Tyson Foods), a major beef slaughter and packing operation (they kill and process approximately 4000 cows per day). Emporia is located at the intersection of US-50, Interstate 335 and Interstate 35 on the Kansas Turnpike. It is the county seat of Lyon County.{{GR|6}}
History
Emporia was founded in 1857, drawing its name from ancient Carthaginian Africa.
