- Jean-François Lyotard - late Robert Woodruff Professor of the Humanities and prominent French philosopher; Jacques Derrida's lecture in his memory, "Lyotard and Us", drew an audience of students and faculty of a size rivaled only by Bill Clinton's speech in Fall 1994, filling the largest lecture hall on campus and three overflow rooms connected by video (Clinton used the gymnasium, as is also the practice for President Carter's annual lecture)
