Emily Gilmore

Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop) is the mother of Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and wife of Richard Gilmore (Edward Herrmann) on the television program Gilmore Girls. She is sometimes tyranical and has strained relations with her daughter because of their differences in personality. Emily is a member of the "aristocracy" of New England, and social standing means a great deal to her. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, an affiliation that means a great deal to her.

In season 3 of Gilmore Girls, it becomes known that Richard had a girlfriend when he met Emily, whom he later broke up with to pursue his relationship with Emily. Richard's mother, the first Lorelai Gilmore, was unhappy with his decision, feeling that Emily is not good enough for her son. Later, she would treat Emily badly throughout their marriage, somewhat echoing Emily's behaviour towards her daughter. Emily is agreed by all characters in the series to have "exquisite taste" and a gift for organizing high society events.
