Elizabeth Fry


 

Elizabeth Fry (May 21, 1780October 12, 1845) was an English prison reformer, social reformer and philanthropist. She was the driving force in legislation to make the treatment of prisoners more humane. She was supported in her efforts by a reigning monarch and has been depicted on British currency.

Marriage and motherhood

She met Joseph Fry when she was twenty years old. They married on August 19, 1800 and moved to Fry's family home near London. They had eleven children in all.

Elizabeth Fry remained a devout Quaker and a caring person. She was recognized officially as a preacher within the Religious Society of Friends.
