The fictional but highly personal narrative is framed around several lectures given during the fading years of her life by Elizabeth Costello, the famed author of The House on Eccles Street, which gave greater voice to James Joyce's Molly Bloom (of Ulysses fame). She is getting old, people only seem to remember her for her piece on Molly Bloom, and so she embarks of a series of lectures in which she and the reader discover uncertainties abound in philosophical and common-day language.
