Elixir has several meanings:

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

  • In alchemy, an elixir was a substance believed to be able to change base metals into gold. Other properties were also attributed to such elixirs, such as increasing human longevity. The Philosopher's stone and the elixir vitae overlap in some traditions. See also: Philosopher's_stone
  • Elixir vitae (elixir of life) was not given to a potion that could preserve or prolong life.
  • In medicine, an elixir is a liquid containing some sort of medicinal drug together with syrup, glycerine or alcohol to mask the unpleasant taste. See: tincture
  • An elixir can also be anything that purports to be a sovereign remedy (that is, a remedy that can cure virtually everything). See: Universal panacea
  • In the Final Fantasy series of video games, the Elixir is an item that restores both HP (Hit Points) and MP (Magic Points) completely to the player character it is used by or on. Similarly, the Megalixir (an abbreviation of Mega Elixir) has the same restorative effects on the entire party.
  • Gaetano Donizetti's most successful comic opera was The Elixir of Love (L'Elisir d'Amore).
  • Elixir Strings is a brand of guitar string produced by W. L. Gore & Associates.
  • Elixir Studios Ltd was a British computer game development company founded in 1998 and closing its doors in 2005. Elixir Studios developed two games, (2003) and Evil Genius (2004).
  • The Elixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse (Herbal Elixir)
