Elisabeth of Austria was born in Buda, Hungary, the daughter of Archduke Joseph of Austria (1776-1847) and his third wife Maria Dorothea von Württemberg (1797-1855).

Her paternal grandparents were Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor and Maria Luisa of Spain. Her maternal grandparents were Ludwig Friedrich Alexander, Prince of Württemberg (1756 - 1817) and Henriette, Princess of Nassau-Weilburg.

Maria Luisa was a daughter of Charles III of Spain and Maria Amalia of Saxony. Ludwig Friedrich Alexander was a younger son of Friedrich II Eugen, Duke of Württemberg and Sophia Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt. He was brother to both Frederick I of Württemberg and Sophia Dorothea of Württemberg, Empress consort of Paul I of Russia.

Her first marriage, on 4 October 1847 in Vienna, was to Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Este (1821-1849), by whom she had one daughter, Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria-Este (1849-1919), wife of King Ludwig III of Bavaria and Jacobite pretender to the thrones of England and Scotland.
