Austria elects on national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature. The president is elected for a six year term by the people. Parliament (Parlament) has two chambers. The National Council (Nationalrat) has 183 members, elected for a four year term by proportional representation.

The politically less significant Federal Council (Bundesrat) has 64 members, elected from five to six year by the provincial parliaments.

Austria has a multi-party system. From 1945 to 1986 Austria had two strong parties and a third party that was electorally successful; since 1986, four parties (for a few years 5) are represented in parliament.
