Elbe crossing 2
Elbe Crossing 2 is a group of masts providing an overhead crossing of lines for four 380kV three phase AC current circuits across the River Elbe. Constructed between 1976 and 1978 to supplement Elbe crossing 1, Elbe crossing 2 consists of 4 masts:

- An anchor pylon of 76 meters height on the Elbe coast of Lower Saxony.
- Two carrying pylons of 227 meters, of which one digs on the island Luehesand and one stands by Hetlinger on the Schleswig-Holsteinisch bank of the Elbe. These pylons, which are the tallest pylons in Europe (the Pylons of Pearl River Crossing in China are taller), were placed on 95 stakes because of the unfavorable building ground. They take a surface of 45 * 45 meters and weigh 980 tons. At heights of 172, 190 and 208 meters, they carry crossbeams for the attachment of conductor cables. The spans of these crossbeams are 56 meters (lowest crossbeam), 72 meters (middle crossbeam) and 57 meters (highest crossbeam). Each pylon has a self-propelled climbing elevator for maintenance of the flight safety beacons; each elevator runs inside a steel tube in the center of the mast. Around this steel tube there is a spiral staircase.
- An anchor pylon of 62 meters height on the Schleswig-Holstein side.
The enormous height of the two carrying masts on the island Luehesand and the Hetlinger digs is required by the passage height of 75 meters over the Elbe demanded by the authorities. Of the 12 conductor cables of the Elbe crossing 2, 6 conductor cables were used at the time of construction. The others were installed because of the difficulty of pushing cable over the Elbe with the

building of the Elbe crossing 2 at the masts, but grounded at the two anchor masts of the Elbe crossing 2. In the 1990s it was decided to electrify those courses in Schleswig-Holstein and to use 4 of the 6 unused conductor cables of the Elbe crossing 2 for a traction current line. Therefore on those 4 conductor cables for 110kV single phase AC current (for the German railway) had to be installed for the Elbe crossing 2 following line section.
