The oldest school of international relations in the United States and one of the leading institutions for the study of diplomacy and international law in the world, the Walsh School of Foreign Service was founded in 1919 by Father Edmund A. Walsh, S.J., a Jesuit priest who recognized the need for a school that would prepare diplomats and business professionals for America?s expanding global involvement. Its success in producing diplomats for the U.S. Foreign Service, which it predates by six years, earned the school the nickname the "West Point of the U.S. diplomatic corps." Famous alumni include former U.S. President Bill Clinton, King Abdullah of Jordan, John Cardinal O?Connor, and George Tenet, former US CIA director.

The Walsh School of Foreign Service is regarded as the most prestigious school within Georgetown University and draws upon a highly competitive applicant pool that overlaps with those of the most selective colleges in the United States.
