Eddy Grant


 
 

Eddy Grant, born 5 March, 1948, is a Guyana-born musician.

When he was still a young boy his parents emigrated to the UK, where he settled. He had his first hit in the late 1960s as lead singer of The Equals with his song Baby Come Back, a song which later topped the UK charts againw ehn covered by UB40 & Pato Banton.

In 1982, his solo recording of "I don't Wanna Dance" spent three weeks at number 1 in the UK single chart. His single "Give Me Hope Joanna" (the name of the woman pronounced "Johanna") was a song about apartheid in South Africa:

"Electric Avenue" was a U.S. number 1, and a number 2 in the UK. A remix of the song was a UK top 10 hit in 2001.

He set up a recording company, ICE Records and more recently has returned to the region from London, choosing Barbados as a more realistic venue for a recording company than his country of origin. He has produced Sting, Mick Jagger and Elvis Costello.
