East Carolina University (ECU) is a public university located in Greenville, North Carolina. As of 2004, ECU was recognized as the third largest university in North Carolina with 1,406 faculty members and an enrollment of 22,767 students (17,510 undergraduate, 4,964 graduate, 308 Doctoral, and 293 Medical). East Carolina University is a pioneer in minimally invasive robotic surgery. On May 3, 2000 at East Carolina's Brody School of Medicine, Dr. Randolph Chitwood performed the first robotic heart value surgery in North America.
