Earl of Clanricarde

Earl of Clanricarde is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It has been created twice, but the second time before the first was dormant or extinct. In 1800, the 13th Earl of Clanricarde was granted a second Earldom of Clanricarde, with a special remainder, failing his male issue, to his daughters by primogeniture, and the heirs male of their bodies. On the death of his grandson, the 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde, in 1916, the male issue of the 13th Earl became extinct, and the 1800 Earldom passed in accordance with the special remainder to the family of the Marquesses of Sligo, who were descended from the 13th Earl's eldest daughter Hester Catherine, who had married the 2nd Marquess of Sligo.
