Dwight D. Opperman


 

Dwight D. Opperman was the CEO of West Publishing Company, now The West Group. During his tenure as CEO, the company moved strategically into technology products with the creation of the Westlaw legal database.

After selling West Publishing Company, he organized and currently serves as chairman of Key Investments, a privately held venture capital firm focusing on high-tech ventures.

Opperman also served on the Board of Governors of Drake University and endowed the Dwight D. Opperman Constitutional Law Lecture there, as well as several full-tuition law scholarships. Drake's Opperman Hall and law library have been named in his honor and in 1984, a campus plaza was dedicated in memory of his wife, Jeanice Wifvat Opperman, who died in 1993. He has also been a generous benefactor to the New York University School of Law and Hamline University School of Law.

In 2002, Forbes 400 ranked Opperman as the 239th richest person in the United States; by 2004, he had dropped in rank to 315th.
