Dunkeld (Dłn Chailleann in Scottish Gaelic) is a small town in Strathtay approximately 15 miles north of Perth on the A9 road into the Scottish Highlands and about one mile north of the village of Birnam, made famous by Shakespeare's Macbeth. Dunkeld and Birnam share a railway station, called Dunkeld and Birnam, on the Highland Main Line.

History

The name Dłn Chailleann means Fort of the Caledonii or of the Caledonians{{mn|afgh|1}}: the hillfort's remains can still be seen.

The Cathedral was built from 1325 and under King David I it was the centre of Christianity in all of Scotland before being destroyed during the Reformation of the 16th Century. In June 2005, there was a major theft from the Cathedral's musuemhttp://news.scotsman.com/scotland.cfm?id=598352005, items stolen including a quaich, communion cups, "and a cast-bronze beadle?s bell with a wooden handle that was used in the cathedral from the 17th century."

The Atholl Memorial Fountain was built as a memorial to John, 6th Duke of Atholl in 1866 and amongst other designs, includes Masonic symbolism.
