Duke of Richmond

The title Duke of Richmond (named after Richmond in North Yorkshire) has been created several times in the Peerage of England. The Dukedom was first created (as Duke of Richmond and Somerset) for the illegitimate son of King Henry VIII, Henry Fitzroy, upon whose death it became extinct. The next creation was for the second Duke of Lennox in 1623; it became extinct upon his death. It was created again for the fourth Duke of Lennox. Upon the death of the sixth Duke of Lennox, both Dukedoms became extinct. The next creation was in August 1675 for Charles Lennox, an illegitimate son of King Charles II, who was further created Duke of Lennox a month later. The Duke of Richmond and Lennox was created Duke of Gordon in 1876. Thus, the Duke holds three dukedoms, more than any other person in the realm.
